Great desert lands extend across Egypt. In the summer, the air above these deserts becomes very hot. As the air is heated. it expands, becomes lighter, and rises. The cooler air in the north stays near the ground, because it is heavier. It flows south to replace the hot air rising from the desert. This flow of air toward the desert forms the Etesian winds. The Etesian winds begin in about the middle of May and continue until mid-October. During the day, the winds blow at speeds from 10 to 30 miles an hour, sometimes reaching speeds of 40 miles an hour. During the cooler nights, when not as much hot air rises from the desert, the Etesian winds blow out.
